Grime artist Skepta was one of a handful of acts invited to perform live during the Brit Awards – but fans of the rapper were outraged after large portions of his performance were censored for broadcast.
The Mercury Prize-winning grime superstar’s epic version of ‘Shutdown’ was frequently muted during Wednesday’s award show, which in itself isn’t necessarily surprising. However, fans are up in arms because BRITs presenter Dermot O’Leary wasn’t censored at all when he encouraged fans to “go batSh!t” while introducing Skepta. Jonathan Ross wasn’t muted either when saying ‘piss’ at another point in the show.
Grime fans also criticised the fact that no artists from the booming London rap scene won any of the awards – despite significant critical acclaim for recent output from Skepta, Kano, Wiley, and more.
