Katsina Man Sentenced to 9 Months Imprisonment for Insulting & Defaming Governor Masari on Social Media

One Gambo Saeed was on Monday sentenced to nine months imprisonment for insulting and defaming the character of Katsina Governor, Aminu Masari on social media, Vanguard reports.

Saeed’s arrest and subsequent prosecution followed a complaint lodged by Mansur Ali Mashi, the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Radio Monitoring.

According to the police prosecutor, Isa Liti: “Mashi said the accused abused Masari and called him names on social media.”

“He said the accused person posted on the media that it was Governor Masari that influenced the impeachment of the Speaker of Katsina State House of Assembly, Aliyu Muduru.”

Saeed was arraigned for intentional insult, defamation of the governor’s character and inciting disturbance.

Liti said the charges were in accordance with sections 399, 392 and 114 of the Penal Code.

He also explained that the accused person confessed to have committed the offences.

Chief Magistrate Abdu Ladan found the accused guilty of the offences.
