Senate Orders Customs Boss to Appear in Uniform, Begins Probe of Assault on Zamfara Corper

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday ordered the comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col Hameed Ali (rtd) to appear before it on March 15th to answer questions on pressing issues to do with the agency’s activities.

The senate also directed Col. Ali to appear before it in his appropriate uniform. The directive was given after Senator Dino Melaye raised concerns about the comptroller-general’s perceived refusal to don the uniform of the Customs service.

Col Hameed Ali retired from the Nigerian Army where he rose through the ranks and served as military governor of Kaduna state between 1996 and 1998. He was appointed the comptroller-general of Customs in August 2015.

The Senate earlier invited the Customs boss over a recent directive to vehicle owners to proceed to zonal offices of the agency to pay customs duty on old vehicles latest by April 12.

Col Hameed Ali allegedly ignored the invitation and according to a senator, he told a newspaper that he was not bound by the senate’s orders.

The comptroller-general had in the past failed to honour invitations by the senate and was threatened with arrest but the threat was never carried out.

On Thursday, senators also raised concerns about reports of Customs officers killing traders from whom they seized food items like bags of rice alleged to have been wrongly imported.

Meanwhile,

The senate on Thursday directed its committee on youths and sports to immediately investigate reports of assault on a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Zamfara state.

The youth corper was reportedly beaten and stripped Nakked by thugs and police officers on the instruction of a wealthy parent whose child was allegedly punished for misbehaving in class.

The senate committee on youth and sports is to return to plenary with its report within a week.
