A police inspector attached to the Ogidi Police Station in Ogidi Anambra state was on Saturday, shot dead by two assailants riding on motorbikes.
Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Ogidi Police Post, Mr Hassan Musa confirmed the tragic incident and told newsmen that the hoodlums also stole the AK-47 rifle the inspector was carrying, Vanguard reports.
According to the DPO, the incident occurred at a police checkpoint near Ugwunwasike Roundabout, where the police team was conducting stop-and-search at about 2.45pm.
But an eyewitness said the assailants took the inspector unawares as they rode straight at him and shot him pointblank. According to the eyewitness, his colleagues took cover at the sound of the shot.
“Other policemen who were with him took cover on hearing the gun shots while the armed men escaped,” the eyewitness said.
The incident which occurred in the blink of an eye caused panic in the vicinity as people, including motorists fled for safety.
Attacks on members of the police force are becoming ramP@nt. Last year, some gunmen were killed after they tried to rob an Inspector of Police at his residence. At another time, a police Inspector and his girlfriend were choked to death by generator fumes in Awka.
The remains of the dead inspector has been deposited at the Iyi-Enu Hospital mortuary and investigations into the crime has commenced.
