Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed his concerns over the safety of players due to the poor state of pitch at Olimp-2 stadium ahead of their Europa League round of 16 clash against Rostov FC.
The Red Devils will face their Russian opponents in a rather strange pitch which might be stumbling block if they are to do well. Mourinho has complained about the poor state of the pitch with concerns over his players safety during the course of the game.’
Jose Mourinho said at his press conference: ‘I told one gentleman from UEFA of my concerns,
‘He just told me the players are insured, so what happens to them is no problem.
‘I don’t know [what United can do], I really don’t know,’ he said.
‘It is hard for me to believe that we are going to play on that field, if you can call it a field.
‘And I don’t know what team to play, really. I don’t know if Henrikh Mkhitaryan is going to play. I don’t know.
‘I have now a lot to think because I was expecting something more playable.
‘In a very similar pitch in the summer in China we decided not to play but it looks like we have to play.’
Manchester United players have trained on the grassy patches of the pitch and will hope to savour a result against the Russian side on Thursday night.
Rostov boss Ivan Daniliants had earlier admitted that the pitch could be a ‘problem’ for the Red Devils, he said:
“The pitch is the same for everyone, but it will still be a problem.
“In the final of the League Cup [when they beat Southampton 3-2 at Wembley], United played on an ideal lawn – it was like a carpet.
“When they arrive here, they will be surprised.”
